Born in Böblingen in 1968, Stefan Rapp studied percussion with Bernhard Wulff at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. After an engagement at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen he became timpanist of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in 1996 and remained associated with the orchestra in that capacity for 23 years. He is a founding member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and has played under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly, Matthias Pintscher and Paavo Järvi; further fields of activity were the Ensemble Modern and the Heimbach Kammermusikfestival with Lars Vogt. He founded ANTARES – The German Percussion Collective, the Bremen chamber music series “Back to the Roots” and the music festival Mosaik. From 1998 to 2005 he headed the percussion class of the Musikhochschule Bremen; in 2018 a professorship for classical percussion was established for the first time at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig, to which he was appointed. For Cybele he played the percussion parts in Wolfgang Rihm’s “Siebengestalt” and “Clamatio” alongside Martin Schmeding on the organ.
