SWR Symphonieorchester

Orchestra

Created in 2016 from the merger of the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR and the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg; the SWR Symphonieorchester is the orchestra of the Südwestrundfunk. Both predecessor orchestras had been founded in 1945/46. In Baden-Baden and Freiburg, Hans Rosbaud, Ernest Bour, Michael Gielen and Sylvain Cambreling were among the principal conductors, in Stuttgart Hans Müller-Kray, Sergiu Celibidache, Neville Marriner, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Georges Prêtre, Roger Norrington and Stéphane Denève. Its focal points are the Romantic repertoire and contemporary music, including at the Donaueschinger Musiktage. The orchestra plays in the Stuttgarter Liederhalle, in the Konzerthaus Freiburg and in the Mannheimer Rosengarten and can be heard at the Schwetzinger Festspiele. From 2018 to 2024 Teodor Currentzis directed the orchestra. Its principal conductor is François-Xavier Roth, who had directed the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg until the merger and took up the post in 2025.
