Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR

Founded in Stuttgart in 1945, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart shaped the musical life of south-west German broadcasting for decades. Among the conductors who determined its development were Hans Müller-Kray, Sergiu Celibidache, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Roger Norrington and Stéphane Denève. Its repertoire joined the classical and Romantic orchestral tradition to the music of the twentieth century and to contemporary works. Under Bernhard Kontarsky the orchestra recorded Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s cello concerto, the „Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu“ and „Stille und Umkehr“ in 2012, opening up different facets of his late symphonic work. In September 2016 it merged with the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg to form the newly founded SWR Symphonieorchester.
