Thomas Kessler

Composer

Born in Zurich on 25 September 1937, died in April 2024; Thomas Kessler was a Swiss composer. He studied composition at the Musikhochschule in Berlin and founded an electronic studio there in 1965. From 1970 to 1971 he was musical director at the Centre universitaire d’etudes dramatiques in Nancy; from 1972 he taught composition and music theory at the Musik-Akademie Basel, where he also built up the electronic studio. From 1981 he worked with a computer system of his own and wrote works such as Drumphony, Drum Control and Flute Control. Live electronic music stands at the centre of his output, alongside chamber and orchestral works. In the Cybele catalogue he appears on DEGEM Vol. 9 – Orpheus 400 and on the audiobook Mirjam Wiesemann: Weht ein Stadtspaziergang durch den Traum (2014).
