Tom Lorenz

Composer / Vibraphone

Born on 19 August 1959 in Düsseldorf; Tom Lorenz is a vibraphonist, composer and bandleader. He studied percussion at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in his home town, in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 1980 and for half a year at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz; since 1982 he has specialised in the vibraphone. In 1993 he founded the band “Das Böse Ding” with Jan Klare, with which he performed at the international Jazzfest in Frankfurt in 1999; he has played in the Cologne-based James Choice Orchestra, has played as a guest soloist with the WDR Big Band and won first prize in the international “Jazzmatch NRW” competition. In his music he explores the borders between jazz and the avant-garde, improvisation and experiment. In the Cybele catalogue he is represented by “Wadi” for solo flute (1999) on Incontri – Encounters (2000), played in its first recording by Christiane Lorenz; the title denotes a dried-up river valley in deserts and steppes, and the flute evokes the wind that blows through it.
