Witold Lutoslawski

Composer

Born in Warsaw on 25 January 1913, died there on 7 February 1994; Witold Lutoslawski was a Polish composer and conductor. At the Warsaw Conservatory he studied piano and composition with Witold Maliszewski, and he also read mathematics at the university. During the German occupation he earned his living with a piano duo in Warsaw cafés, together with Andrzej Panufnik. After the war the Concerto for Orchestra (1954) made him internationally known; from Jeux venitiens (1961) onwards he worked with a controlled aleatory technique in which the parts move rhythmically independently. His output comprises four symphonies, concertos for cello, oboe and piano, choral and vocal works and chamber music, among it the Partita for violin and piano of 1984. In the Cybele catalogue his chamber music is heard on Recital: Annette-Barbara Vogel (2002), played by Annette-Barbara Vogel and Ulrich Hofmann.
