Born in Warsaw in 1956; Wlodzimierz Gula is a double bassist. He studied at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and continued his training at the Herbert von Karajan Academy in Berlin, where for two years he took part in concerts and recordings of the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan. He played as principal bass at the Warsaw Chamber Opera and in the Polish Chamber Orchestra, today’s Sinfonia Varsovia. From 1982 he was principal double bass in German orchestras, first in the Symphonisches Orchester Berlin, then in the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt and from 1986 with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker. In chamber music he has appeared with the Trio Voyage and with the Classic Jazz Trio, which he founded and which combines classical music with jazz; in 2008 it gave a concert with the saxophonist Branford Marsalis in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. On the audiobook Mirjam Wiesemann: Auf Flügeln in die Tiefe – Geschichten vom Aufwachsen (2010) he plays excerpts from Sergei Koussevitzky’s Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra in F sharp minor op. 3 and improvisations of his own for the story “Warum spielst Du Kontrabass, Vater?”.
