Born in Vyshny Volochyok on 26 July 1874, died in Boston on 4 June 1951; Serge Koussevitzky was a Russian-American double bass player, conductor, publisher and composer. He studied at the Music and Drama School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and came to notice as a double bass virtuoso; for his instrument he wrote, among other things, a concerto and several short pieces. In 1909 he founded the publishing house Editions Russes de Musique in Berlin, which issued works by Alexander Scriabin, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev. From 1924 to 1949 he was chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and awarded numerous commissions; the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, founded in 1942, continues this work. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on the audiobook Mirjam Wiesemann: Auf Flügeln in die Tiefe – Geschichten vom Aufwachsen (2010).
