Alexander von Zemlinsky

Born in Vienna on 14 October 1871, died in Larchmont near New York on 15 March 1942; Alexander von Zemlinsky was an Austrian composer and conductor. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory and became the only composition teacher of Arnold Schönberg, who later married his sister Mathilde. From 1911 to 1927 he directed the Neues Deutsches Theater in Prague as opera director, and afterwards worked at the Kroll Opera in Berlin. In 1938 he emigrated to the USA. His output comprises operas, among them Eine florentinische Tragödie and Der Zwerg, symphonies, the Lyrische Symphonie, string quartets and songs. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on the audiobook Urs Faes: Als hätte die Stille Türen (2006), which revolves around Alban Berg and the Viennese School.
