Born 1885 in Vienna, died there in 1935; Alban Berg was an Austrian composer and a member of the Second Viennese School. From 1904 to 1911 he studied with Arnold Schönberg and developed his teacher’s ideas of free atonality and twelve-note technique into a personal, strongly expressive idiom. With the operas “Wozzeck” and “Lulu”, the “Lyrische Suite” and the violin concerto he created key works of classical modernism. Berg joined structural rigour to a musical language marked by late-Romantic sonority and dramatic intensity.
