A Dutch string quartet formed from soloists of the DoelenEnsemble; specialising in the string quartet literature of the modern era and the present, with an emphasis on works by Dutch composers. The quartet took shape in 1993 and has had the same line-up since 2007: Frank de Groot and Maartje Kraan (violin), Karin Dolman (viola) and Hans Woudenberg (cello); earlier members include Laurens van Vliet, Monique Bartels and Sophia Torenga. It has worked with Steve Reich, Wolfgang Rihm, Henri Dutilleux and Thomas Adès among others and commissions new works regularly; in 2017 it marked its 25th anniversary with a jubilee concert at De Doelen, Rotterdam. Nine albums have connected the DoelenKwartet with Cybele since 2001. It began with Portrait Peter-Jan Wagemans (2001), followed by Wolfgang Rihm’s String Quartets Nos. 1, 4, 8 and 5 (2006, awarded the 10/10 Award by ClassicsToday and the Luister10 Award), Calliope Tsoupaki’s Triptychon with Arjan Woudenberg (2016) and Thomas Adès’s String Quartets and Piano Quintet with Dimitri Vassilakis (2017, ICMA nomination 2018 and Longlist of the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik). The quartet also took part in the label’s word-and-music productions: the audiobooks after Urs Faes (2006) and Arnold Schönberg’s Die Prinzessin (2008, ECHO Klassik 2009 and LEOPOLD media prize) as well as three volumes of the Edition Künstler im Gespräch — Karl Amadeus Hartmann (2009, ECHO Klassik 2010 as surround recording of the year and Deutscher Hörbuchpreis 2011), Hans Erich Apostel (2010) and Sandor Veress (2017).
