Laurens van Vliet

Violin

Dutch violinist; played second violin in the DoelenKwartet before the quartet found its present line-up in 2007. The DoelenKwartet came into being in the mid-nineties out of the Rotterdam-based DoelenEnsemble, with which it has presented a concert series for new music at the Concert- en Congresgebouw De Doelen since the early nineties. In it Laurens van Vliet played alongside Frank de Groot (first violin), Karin Dolman (viola) and Hans Woudenberg (cello). The quartet’s focus lies on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries; it brings works by younger composers of the Rotterdam school to performance and works closely with composers such as Henri Dutilleux, Peter-Jan Wagemans and Mauricio Kagel. It recorded Wolfgang Rihm’s String Quartets Nos. 1, 4, 8 and 5 in close collaboration with the composer and appeared with him at the Prime-Festival Groningen. Four albums connect him with Cybele, all as a member of the DoelenKwartet: Portrait Peter-Jan Wagemans (2001), Wolfgang Rihm’s String Quartets Nos. 1, 4, 8 and 5 (2006) and the audiobooks after Urs Faes (2006) and Arnold Schönberg’s Die Prinzessin (2008).
