Henri Dutilleux

Henri Dutilleux was born on 22 January 1916 in Angers and died on 22 May 2013 in Paris. From 1933 he studied at the Paris Conservatoire, among other subjects counterpoint and fugue with Noël Gallon, composition with Henri Büsser, conducting with Philippe Gaubert and music history with Maurice Emmanuel; in 1938 he received the Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata “L’anneau du Roi”. From 1945 to 1963 he headed the department for musical illustrations at Radio France. From 1961 he taught composition at the École Normale de Musique and from 1970 to 1984 at the Paris Conservatoire. His works include the Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, “Métaboles” (1965), the cello concerto “Tout un monde lointain” (1970), the string quartet “Ainsi la nuit” (1977), the violin concerto “L’arbre des songes” and “The Shadows of Time” (1998). In 1967 he received the Grand Prix National de la Musique, in 1994 the Praemium Imperiale and in 2005 the Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis.
