Henri Dutilleux was born in Angers on 22 January 1916 and died in Paris on 22 May 2013. At the Paris Conservatoire he studied counterpoint and fugue with Noël Gallon, composition with Henri Büsser and conducting with Philippe Gaubert, among other subjects; in 1938 he won the Grand Prix de Rome. From 1945 to 1963 he headed the department for musical illustration at Radio France, and subsequently shaped composition teaching at the École Normale de Musique and the Paris Conservatoire. Works such as *Métaboles*, *Tout un monde lointain*, *L’arbre des songes* and the string quartet *Ainsi la nuit* show an independent, sound-sensitive language beyond fixed schools and stylistic programmes.
