DoelenEnsemble

Founded in 1990 by Peter-Jan Wagemans and Frank de Groot as the resident ensemble of the De Doelen concert hall in Rotterdam; the DoelenEnsemble plays music of the 20th and 21st centuries. From 1990 to 2012 Peter-Jan Wagemans was its artistic director; in 2012 the ensemble’s pianist, Maarten van Veen, took over this task. The DoelenEnsemble has worked with composers such as Meriç Artaç, Gavin Bryars, Steve Coleman, Aftab Darvishi, Tan Dun, David Lang, György Ligeti, Per Norgard, Steve Reich, Klaas de Vries, Peter-Jan Wagemans and John Adams, and also plays music from the crossover field, for example by William Duckworth, Julius Eastman, Osvaldo Golijov, Judd Greenstein, Pat Metheny, Max Richter, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Frank Zappa. In 2022 Cybele Records released Peter-Jan Wagemans: Night Dancer with the DoelenEnsemble under Arie van Beek.
