Hans Woudenberg

Cello

Dutch cellist; member of the DoelenKwartet, in which he has played since 2007 in an unchanged line-up alongside Frank de Groot, Maartje Kraan and Karin Dolman; focus on the string quartet literature of the modern era and the present. The DoelenKwartet was formed in the mid-nineties by members of the Rotterdam-based DoelenEnsemble and is the resident quartet of the Concert- en Congresgebouw De Doelen, where it has presented a series of new music since the early nineties, since 2007 as part of the international series “Red Sofa”. In the years of the Cybele recordings, Frank de Groot, Karin Dolman and, until 2007, Laurens van Vliet played alongside him. The quartet performs works by younger composers of the Rotterdam school and has worked with Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Rihm, Harrison Birtwistle, Steve Reich and Peter-Jan Wagemans; it recorded Rihm’s string quartets in close collaboration with the composer and appeared with him at the Prime-Festival Groningen. For Arnold Schönberg’s “Die Eiserne Brigade” (1916) in the version for piano quintet, the pianist Maarten van Veen joined them. Six albums connect him with Cybele as the cellist of the DoelenKwartet. They range from Portrait Peter-Jan Wagemans (2001) and Wolfgang Rihm’s String Quartets Nos. 1, 4, 8 and 5 (2006) to the label’s word-and-music productions: the audiobooks after Urs Faes (2006) and Arnold Schönberg’s Die Prinzessin (2008) as well as the conversation volumes on Karl Amadeus Hartmann (2009) and Hans Erich Apostel (2010) from the Edition Künstler im Gespräch.
