Karl Amadeus Hartmann was born in Munich on 2 August 1905 and died there on 5 December 1963. He studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Tonkunst München, worked closely with Hermann Scherchen and in 1942 took private lessons with Anton Webern. During the National Socialist dictatorship he articulated his artistic resistance in works such as „Miserae“, the later „Concerto funebre“ and the opera „Simplicius Simplicissimus“. After 1945 Hartmann worked as a music dramaturge at the Bavarian State Opera and, with what became the musica viva series, founded a platform for new music that remains formative to this day; his eight symphonies belong to the core of his work.
