Born 1901 in Karlsruhe, died 1972 in Vienna; Hans Erich Apostel was an Austrian composer, pianist and teacher. After training in Karlsruhe he went to Vienna in 1921 and studied with Arnold Schönberg and, from 1925 to 1935, with Alban Berg. As president of the Austrian section of the International Society for Contemporary Music he worked for the music of his time from 1947 to 1950; later he was an editor at Universal Edition. His output comprises orchestral, chamber and vocal music and joins the impulses of the Viennese School to an independent, concentrated idiom.
