Calliope Tsoupaki

Composer

Born in Piraeus on 27 May 1963; Calliope Tsoupaki is a Greek-Dutch composer. She studied piano and music theory at the Hellinicon Conservatory in Athens and composition with Yannis Ioannidis. In 1988 she moved to the Netherlands and continued her studies with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, graduating in 1992; she lives in Amsterdam. Since 2007 she has taught composition at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. From 2018 to 2021 she was Componist des Vaderlands. Her catalogue comprises more than 150 works, from solo pieces to opera, among them the “St Luke Passion”, premiered at the Holland Festival in 2008, the operas “Mariken in the Garden of Delights” (2015) and “Fortress Europe” (2017), and “Thin Air”, for which she received the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize in 2021. In 2026 she was awarded the Johan Wagenaar Prize for her entire oeuvre. The album Calliope Tsoupaki: Triptychon (2016) brings together the three parts of her cycle “Triptychon” (2005/2013) with the DoelenKwartet and the clarinettist Arjan Woudenberg; the recording received an honorary mention from the Union of Greek Theatre and Music Critics.
