Founded in 1997 in the course of chamber music studies at the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen in the class of Vladimir Mendelssohn; the Trio Contrasts plays in the scoring clarinet, violin and piano and is named after Béla Bartok’s “Contrasts”. In the line-up documented by Cybele the players are Christian Dollfuß (clarinet), Klaus Esser (violin) and Christoph Hengst (piano). The trio is devoted to the original literature for this scoring and to contemporary commissioned works; in 2002 the album New Chamber Music: Clarinet Trios of the 20th Century appeared on Cybele Records, with Gottfried von Einem’s “Verdehr-Trio” op. 97, Alban Berg’s Adagio, Friedrich Scholz’s Theme with Variations and Ernst Krenek’s Trio op. 107.
