Founded in September 1978 by KMD Klaus Uwe Ludwig; oratorio choir at the Lutherkirche Wiesbaden with around 100 singers from Wiesbaden and the Rheingau. It was directed by Klaus Uwe Ludwig (1978–2007) and Jörg Endebrock (2008–2019), and since 2020 by Niklas Sikner. Each year three oratorio performances and one a cappella concert are on the programme, together with liturgical duties as the church choir of the Lutherkirche, with schola singing, sacred a cappella literature and cantatas with soloists and orchestra. Alongside works by its namesake Johann Sebastian Bach, the choir also sings rarely performed compositions, among them Frank Martin’s “Golgotha”, Francis Poulenc’s “Stabat Mater”, Lili Boulanger’s Psalm 130, Franz Schmidt’s “Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln” and Edward Elgar’s “The Dream of Gerontius”. Its permanent partner is the Bachorchester Wiesbaden. Since 1994 there has been a partnership with the Royal Tunbridge Wells Choral Society in Wiesbaden’s British twin town, with joint concerts. Concert tours have taken the choir to Breslau, Budapest, Danzig, Ghent, Paris, England and the USA. In 2003 it received the Kulturpreis of the Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden. In the Cybele catalogue the choir sings the Jesus-Passion (1983-85) on Oskar Gottlieb Blarr and the Jesus-Passion (2018), together with the Jugendkantorei der Evangelischen Singakademie Wiesbaden and the Bachorchester Wiesbaden under Jörg Endebrock.
