Born in Duisburg on 1 December 1948, Bernd Hänschke is a German composer, conductor and teacher. He studied school music in Cologne and composition with Joachim Blume and Hans Ulrich Humpert, and from 1980 to 1983 was a leading figure of Hans Werner Henze’s master class in Cologne. In 1989 he founded the Henze-Kammerensemble, of which he became artistic director, and in 1998 initiated with Mogens Christensen the German-Danish project EuHenzeNord. His work comprises music in all genres and often seeks the proximity of stage, theatre, image and electronic media; from 2000 he also directed the Ensemble Neue Musik at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, Dortmund department.
