Born 1926 in Gütersloh, died 2012 in Dresden; studied in Braunschweig, Heidelberg and with Wolfgang Fortner; turned away from strict serial dodecaphony in the 1950s and moved to Italy in 1953; joined tradition, theatre, poetry and political commitment in his works; founder of the Festival Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano (1976) and of the Munich Biennale for New Music Theatre (1988); professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik Köln (1980–1991); recipient of the Praemium Imperiale (2000).
