Born in Weimar in 1714, died in Hamburg in 1788; Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a composer and harpsichordist. As a son of Johann Sebastian Bach he attended the Thomasschule in Leipzig and then studied law in Leipzig and Frankfurt an der Oder. From 1738 he was in the service of the Prussian crown prince and later King Friedrich II as harpsichordist; during this period, in 1753, his “Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen” appeared. In 1768 he took up in Hamburg, as successor to his godfather Georg Philipp Telemann, the post of music director at the five principal churches. He wrote keyboard works, symphonies and sacred compositions. Works by him appeared on Cybele on German Music of the 18th Century (1998) and on hd-klassik on Bäche – Orchestral Works of the Bach Family (2023).
