Born 1714 in Weimar, died 1788 in Hamburg; Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a German composer and one of the most important harpsichordists of the Empfindsamkeit. As a son of Johann Sebastian Bach he attended the Thomasschule in Leipzig and then studied law in Leipzig and Frankfurt an der Oder. From 1738 he was in the service of the Prussian crown prince and later King Frederick II; in 1768 he took over the post of music director in Hamburg as successor to Georg Philipp Telemann. His keyboard works, symphonies and sacred compositions shaped the development from the late Baroque to the Classical style.
