Born in Altona in 1824, died in Leipzig in 1910; Carl Reinecke was a composer, pianist, conductor and music teacher. He received his first lessons in piano, violin, composition and music theory from his father Rudolf Reinecke. From 1846 to 1848 he was royal court pianist in Copenhagen, from 1851 to 1854 a teacher of piano and composition at the Cologne Conservatory, from 1854 to 1859 music director in Barmen and in 1859/60 university music director and head of the Singakademie in Breslau. From 1860 to 1895 he directed the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig as Kapellmeister; from 1860 to 1902 he taught piano, composition and ensemble playing at the Leipzig Conservatory. His output comprises symphonies, concertos, chamber music, operas, oratorios, piano works and an extensive body of songs; in 1907 he recorded works by Robert Schumann on piano rolls. At Cybele his complete children’s songs are recorded on two albums (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, both 2001), sung by Caroline Merz, Martha Marquez and Carola Guber, with Thomas Leander at the piano.
