Darius Milhaud

Born in Marseille on 4 September 1892, died in Geneva on 22 June 1974; Darius Milhaud was a French composer. At the Paris Conservatoire he studied with Paul Dukas, Charles-Marie Widor and Vincent d’Indy. From 1917 to 1918 he was attaché to the poet Paul Claudel at the French legation in Rio de Janeiro; Brazilian music marked works such as Le Boeuf sur le toit and Saudades do Brasil. In Paris he belonged to the Groupe des Six. In 1940 he emigrated to the USA and taught at Mills College in California; from 1947 he taught alternately there and at the Paris Conservatoire. His extensive output comprises operas, ballets, symphonies, chamber music and film scores; polytonality is characteristic of it. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on Il Ritratto dell’amore (1999), played by Jeremias Schwarzer and Egon Mihajlovic.
