Paul Dukas was born in Paris on 1 October 1865 and died there on 17 May 1935. The French composer, critic and teacher is known above all for the symphonic poem *L’Apprenti sorcier* of 1897, but left, despite a deliberately small catalogue of works, a many-sided œuvre. Among his principal works is the opera *Ariane et Barbe-Bleue* after Maurice Maeterlinck. Dukas also worked editorially on music by Rameau and Couperin, arranged Saint-Saëns’s *Samson et Dalila* for piano duet and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1906.
