George Enescu was born in Liveni, Romania, on 19 August 1881 and died in Paris on 4 May 1955. He appeared publicly as a violinist at the age of eight, studied first at the conservatory in Vienna and then in Paris with Martin Pierre Marsick, André Gédalge, Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré. In 1898 he made his debut as a composer at the Concerts Colonne in Paris with the *Poème roumain* op. 1. Enescu joined an international career as violinist, pianist and conductor to important teaching; his pupils included Yehudi Menuhin, Arthur Grumiaux and Ivry Gitlis. His *Romanian Rhapsodies*, the opera *Œdipe* and the chamber symphony are among the central works of Romanian musical history.
