Gerriet K. Sharma

Composer / Sound artist

Born in 1974; Gerriet K. Sharma is a composer, sound artist and artistic researcher in the field of spatial sound practice. He studied media art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln and composition and computer music at the Kunstuniversität Graz, where he received his doctorate from the artistic doctoral school in 2016 with a thesis on the sculpturality of sound phenomena. From 2009 to 2015 he initiated and curated the concert series signale-graz for electroacoustic music and performance at the Graz university. In 2017 he was appointed to the Edgard Varèse guest professorship at the Electronic Studio of the Technische Universität Berlin, in 2020 he co-founded the Lab for Spatial Aesthetics in Sound (spaes) at the Funkhaus Berlin, and from 2022 to 2024 he was guest professor for experimental sound and space at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe. He works with the spatialisation of compositions in Ambisonics and wave field synthesis, with 3D audio and beamforming loudspeakers; his binaural spatial sound model “Firniss Redux” was presented at documenta fifteen in 2022 as part of lumbung radio. On the Cybele album DEGEM Vol. 9 – Orpheus 400 (2007) he is represented with “Orphée 49 Edit 1 (Hommage à J.C.)” (2007), which he wrote with Dirk Specht under their joint name NooK.
