Hans-Werner Schneider

Composer / Electronics

Born on 29 May 1953 in Kettwig; Hans-Werner Schneider is a German composer and church musician. He studied composition with Wolfgang Hufschmidt and electronic music with Dirk Reith at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. He then worked as a teacher of electronic music, performance artist, silent film accompanist and arranger, particularly across styles and media, including projects with visual artists and environments; since 1995 he has worked mainly with the singer Ursula Reinhard. In Oberhausen he works as a choir director and organist; besides the organ he plays piano, percussion and cornett. In the Cybele catalogue he is represented by the tape piece “wenn ich auf einem Instrument spiele…” (1974) on ex machina Vol. 4 – Die siebziger Jahre (2001): from the critical remarks of a dissatisfied concertgoer, copying, cutting, mixing, splicing and looping create a piece around the word “Nein!”, in which the sentence “das ist keine Musik” takes on an almost dance-like character in the loop.
