Hartmut Haenchen

Conductor

Born on 21 March 1943 in Dresden, Hartmut Haenchen grew up in the GDR. He received his musical training in the Dresdner Kreuzchor and in his studies in conducting and singing at the Dresdner Musikhochschule. In 1986 he went to the Netherlands, where he was principal conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and for 13 years musical director of the Netherlands Opera. His work comprises the operatic and symphonic repertoire with particular emphases on Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mahler and historically informed performance practice; in 2016 he conducted the new production of “Parsifal” at the Bayreuther Festspiele. In 2008 he received the Bundesverdienstkreuz, and in 2010, for “Parsifal” at the Brussels opera house La Monnaie, the Prix de l’Europe Francophone and the Grand Prix de la Critique; in 2017 the magazine Opernwelt named him conductor of the year. His discography comprises more than 130 recordings. He is the conductor on the Cybele album Wolfgang Hufschmidt: Meissner Tedeum (2003).
