Hartmut Haenchen

Conductor

Born in Dresden on 21 March 1943, Hartmut Haenchen grew up in the GDR and became an internationally formative conducting personality. His musical formation came in the Dresdner Kreuzchor and in studies of conducting and singing at the Dresden Musikhochschule; in 1986 he took over the direction of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra as well as the musical direction of Dutch National Opera. His artistic work comprises the great operatic and symphonic repertoire, with particular emphases on Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mahler and historically informed performance practice. For his services to music and culture he received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2008; his discography comprises more than 130 recordings.
