Heiner Goebbels

Heiner Goebbels was born on 17 August 1952 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße and has lived in Frankfurt am Main since 1972, and also in Berlin. He studied sociology and music and played in the Goebbels/Harth-Duo (1975–1988), in the Sogenanntes Linksradikales Blasorchester (1976–1981) and in the art rock group Cassiber (1982–1992). As a composer and director he develops music theatre, staged concerts, radio pieces, orchestral works as well as sound and video installations; his works include “Surrogate Cities” (1994), “Schwarz auf Weiss”, “Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten” (2002), “Eraritjaritjaka” (2004), “Stifters Dinge” (2007) and “A House of Call” (2021). From 1999 to 2018 he was professor at the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft of the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen and from 2018 to 2024 Georg-Büchner-Professor there. From 2006 to 2018 he was president of the Hessische Theaterakademie, and from 2012 to 2014 artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale. In 2012 he received the International Ibsen Award. He takes part as a performer on the Cybele album Rolf Riehm: Machandelboom (2003).
