Founded in 1929 as the Frankfurter Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester; the hr-Sinfonieorchester is the orchestra of the Hessischer Rundfunk and plays in the hr-Sendesaal in Frankfurt am Main, and also in the Alte Oper. Its concert series include the “Große Reihe”, the “Jungen Konzerte”, the chamber music series and “Barock+”. The line of principal conductors begins in 1929 with Hans Rosbaud and leads by way of Dean Dixon (1961 to 1974) to Eliahu Inbal (1974 to 1990), Dmitri Kitajenko (1990 to 1997), Hugh Wolff (1997 to 2006), Paavo Järvi (2006 to 2013) and Andrés Orozco-Estrada (2014 to 2021); Alain Altinoglu took up the post in 2021. Inbal and Järvi are linked with the orchestra as honorary conductors. Under Inbal, recordings of the Bruckner symphonies in their first versions were made from 1983 and, from 1988, the first complete digital recording of the symphonies of Gustav Mahler; both cycles received the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis.
