Born 1917 in Korea, died 1995 in Berlin; Isang Yun was a Korean-German composer whose music joins East Asian ideas of sound to techniques of the European avant-garde. After studies in Korea and Japan he continued his training from 1956 to 1959 in Paris and Berlin, with Josef Rufer among others. In 1966 “Réak” brought him his international breakthrough at the Donaueschingen festival. As professor at the conservatoires in Hanover and Berlin he shaped the teaching of composition; his work comprises more than a hundred compositions, among them operas, symphonies and concertos.
