Born 1735 in Leipzig, died 1782 in London; Johann Christian Bach was the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach and one of the internationally most successful composers of his generation. After his father’s early death he continued his training with his half-brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in Berlin, before going to Italy in 1755 and working in Milan as organist and maestro di cappella. From 1762 he lived in London, where he wrote operas, symphonies and keyboard concertos and, together with Carl Friedrich Abel, founded an important concert series. Known as the “London Bach”, he mediated Italian melody, the galant style and early Classicism.
