Jon English

Jon English is a trombonist active in Cologne who can be traced in the European improvisation and new music scene of the 1970s and 1980s. He worked with musicians such as Slide Hampton, Steve Lacy and Manfred Schoof; in Schoof’s orchestra he is documented as a trombonist alongside Albert Mangelsdorff on the 1983 recording Reflections. In 1975 English played the first performance of Rolf Gehlhaar’s “Rondell” for trombone and delay in Amsterdam and made the first recording of the work for WDR in Cologne in 1976. In 1984 he took part in a project by Phil Niblock in Berlin. For Johannes Fritsch’s Trio 1977 he took the trombone part; the recording is listed in the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie. On Cybele Records he is represented on Feedback Studio Köln Vol. 7 – Johannes Fritsch: 3 Trios (2006) and on the sampler 25 Years of Feedback Studio Köln (1996).
