Born in Oneglia in Liguria in 1925, died in Rome in 2003; Luciano Berio was a composer. From 1945 he studied composition with Giulio Cesare Paribeni and Giorgio Federico Ghedini at the Conservatorio in Milan as well as conducting with Carlo Maria Giulini and Antonino Votto, and in 1952 he attended Luigi Dallapiccola’s courses in Tanglewood. In 1955, together with Bruno Maderna, he founded the Studio di Fonologia of the RAI in Milan. From 1974 to 1980 he directed the electroacoustic department of IRCAM, in 1987 he founded the Centro Tempo Reale in Florence, and from 2000 he was president of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. His works include the 14 Sequenze for solo instruments (1958–2002), Sinfonia (1968), “Folk Songs” and “Un re in ascolto”. He received the Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis and the Wolf Prize, among other distinctions.
