Born 1925 in Oneglia in Liguria, died 2003 in Rome; Luciano Berio was an Italian composer and a formative voice of the musical avant-garde after 1945. He studied at the Milan Conservatorio with Giulio Cesare Paribeni and Giorgio Federico Ghedini and with Luigi Dallapiccola at Tanglewood. In 1955, together with Bruno Maderna, he founded the RAI Studio di Fonologia in Milan and explored there new relations between instrumental sound, electronics and language. Works such as the “Sequenza” series, “Sinfonia” and “Folk Songs” show his interest in virtuoso solo music, memory, voice and cultural multilingualism.
