Born 1770 in Bonn, died 1827 in Vienna; Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. He received his early training in Bonn and moved to Vienna in 1792, where he studied with Joseph Haydn among others and quickly established himself as a piano virtuoso. His work led classical forms into new expressive and structural dimensions: from the piano sonatas and string quartets to the symphonies, the violin concerto and the “Missa solemnis”. Despite advancing deafness, Beethoven created in his late years works of radical formal freedom and lasting influence.
