Markus Stockhausen

Born in Cologne on 2 May 1957; Markus Stockhausen is a trumpeter, flugelhorn player and composer and the son of the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. From 1974 to 1982 he studied classical trumpet with Robert Platt and jazz trumpet with Manfred Schoof at the Hochschule für Musik Köln; further studies took him to Pierre Thibaud, Thomas Stevens, Carmine Caruso and Konradin Groth. Between 1975 and 2001 he took part in his father’s ensembles, among other things in works from “Donnerstag aus Licht” and “Samstag aus Licht”. His own formations include the Markus Stockhausen Group, the duo Moving Sounds with Tara Bouman, the Trio Inside Out with Florian Weber and Patrice Héral as well as Eternal Voyage and Wild Life. From 1996 to 2001 he taught trumpet at the Musikhochschule Köln. He has been honoured, among other things, at the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb in 1981, with the WDR-Jazzpreis in 2005 and the Deutscher Jazzpreis in 2021; in 2023 he was elected to the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste.
