Maurice Ravel

Composer

Born in Ciboure on 7 March 1875, died in Paris on 28 December 1937; Maurice Ravel was a composer and pianist. At the Paris Conservatoire he studied piano and later composition with Gabriel Faure; he applied several times in vain for the Prix de Rome, which caused a public quarrel in 1905. His music combines classical forms with colourful harmony, Spanish and Basque influences, elements of jazz and an unusually precise instrumentation. His works include the ballets Daphnis et Chloe and Bolero, the piano cycles Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit, the two piano concertos, the string quartet, the opera L’Enfant et les sortileges and the orchestral version of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal LIVE (Vol. 3, 2021), recorded by the Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal under Julia Jones.
