Founded in 1862; an orchestra based in the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal; opera orchestra of the Wuppertaler Bühnen; historical guest conductors such as Brahms, Strauss and Mahler; former music directors including Toshiyuki Kamioka, Julia Jones; chief conductor Patrick Hahn. It was founded as the Elberfelder Kapelle; in 2012 the ensemble, classified as an A orchestra, celebrated its 150th anniversary. From the 2004/2005 season Toshiyuki Kamioka led the orchestra as general music director; from 2014/2015 he was at the same time opera director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen. In August 2016 Julia Jones took over the position and introduced new concert and outreach formats until 2021; with the 2021/22 season Patrick Hahn followed. Alongside its work in the opera house, the orchestra plays more than 40 concert programmes per season in the Historische Stadthalle, an Art Nouveau building. Concert tours have taken it to Japan, among other places, and every year to Milan; in January 2020 it returned to the Concertgebouw Amsterdam after its debut of 2011. Three albums connect the orchestra with the house, all on the sister label hd-klassik and all recorded live in the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal: the three volumes of Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal LIVE from the years 2017, 2018 and 2021, produced in 3D binaural stereo and surround.
