Morton Feldman was born on 12 January 1926 in New York and died on 3 September 1987 in Buffalo; he was a composer and belonged to the New York School. He received piano lessons from Vera Maurina Press and studied composition with Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe. His encounter with John Cage in 1949 led to a lifelong artistic association and to new forms of graphic notation and open musical processes. His works include “Rothko Chapel” (1971), the opera “Neither” after a text by Samuel Beckett (1977), the String Quartet II (1983), lasting more than six hours, and “For Philip Guston” (1984). From 1972 he taught at the University at Buffalo, from 1973 as Edgard Varèse Professor of Music Composition, until his death.
