Born 1947 in Vienna; Rainer Bischof is an Austrian composer, philosopher and arts administrator. He studied philosophy, art history and composition, took his doctorate at the University of Vienna in 1973 and received private composition lessons from Hans Erich Apostel. His output comprises solo, chamber, vocal, operatic and orchestral works. From 1988 to 2005 he was secretary general of the Wiener Symphoniker and from 1991 to 2015 president of the International Gustav Mahler Society.
