Richard Wagner

Composer

Born on 22 May 1813 in Leipzig, died on 13 February 1883 in Venice; Richard Wagner was a German composer, conductor, dramatist and writer on music. From February 1843 he was second Hofkapellmeister (court conductor) in Dresden, where “Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg” was premiered in 1845. After taking part in the Dresden May Uprising of 1849 he fled and from the end of July 1849 lived in exile in Zurich. Ludwig II brought him to Munich, where “Tristan und Isolde” was premiered in June 1865; in August 1876 the tetralogy “Der Ring des Nibelungen” was staged in Bayreuth for the first time before an international audience, and in 1882 his last work, “Parsifal”, was the centrepiece of the second Bayreuth Festival. In the Cybele catalogue he is represented with the overture and the Venusberg music from “Tannhäuser” in the 1874 version on Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal LIVE (Vol. 2) (2018), played by the Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal under Julia Jones and recorded in March 2018 in the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal.
