Roberto Doati

Roberto Doati was born in Genoa in 1953 and is a composer and researcher in electronic music. After early experience with free improvisation and tape music he studied electronic music with Albert Mayr in Florence, computer music with Pietro Grossi in Pisa and with Alvise Vidolin, and graduated from the Conservatory of Venice in 1979; from 1979 he worked at the Centro di Sonologia Computazionale of the University of Padua. His works combine instrumental, electroacoustic, interactive and audiovisual procedures and were written in part on commission from the Biennale di Venezia. In 1992 he received a distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica, in 2014 the Premio Franco Abbiati, as well as grants from the Rockefeller Foundation (2001) and the MacDowell Colony (2005). He taught at the University of Macerata (1988–1993) and at several Italian conservatories, from 2005 to 2017 in Genoa; in 2020 he ended his academic career at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Nicolini in Piacenza. He is represented as a composer and performer on the Cybele album DEGEM Vol. 7 – kontinuum … bruchlos (2003).
