Born on 25 October 1885 in New York City, died on 22 November 1959 in New York City; Sam M. Lewis was an American lyricist. He began by singing in cafés in New York, started writing lyrics around 1912 and from 1916 into the 1930s had Joe Young as his principal lyric-writing partner; together they worked with composers such as Fred Ahlert, Walter Donaldson, Ray Henderson and Harry Warren. His standards include “Dinah”, “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue” and “I’m Sitting on Top of the World”; songs of his were heard in films such as “The Singing Fool” and “Spring Is Here”. In 1914 he was a charter member of ASCAP, and in 1970 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Sam M. Lewis is named in the Cybele catalogue as a co-writer of “Have A Little Faith In Me”, sung by Björn Bergs on the gala recording Doc Heilein and Friends Gala 2023 – Ich will keine Schokolade (2023).
