Thomas Baldner was born in Berlin in 1928 and died in Bloomington, Indiana, in 2015. The German conductor and teacher was a son of the cellist Max Baldner, fled Germany in the 1930s and studied with Pierre Monteux. In the 1950s he was artistic director of the Rheinisches Kammerorchester Köln, where he also worked with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. From 1976 to 2008 he taught conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, where he shaped a generation of young conductors.
