Thomas Baldner was born in Berlin in 1928 and died in Bloomington, Indiana, in 2015. The conductor and teacher was a son of the cellist Max Baldner, fled Germany in the 1930s and studied with Pierre Monteux; he took his degrees at Indiana University. In 1954 he founded the Greenwich Philharmonia in Connecticut, and in 1960 he received a prize at the international conducting competition in Rome. In the 1950s he was artistic director of the Rheinisches Kammerorchester Köln and worked there with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen as well. From 1976 to 2008 he taught conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington and headed the department of orchestral conducting there until 2000. On Cybele he is represented as conductor on Feedback Studio Köln Vol. 10 – Johannes Fritsch: Live-Electronic Music (2011) and on the audiobook Mirjam Wiesemann: Weht ein Stadtspaziergang durch den Traum (2014).
