German composer from the circle of the Institut für Computermusik und Elektronische Medien at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen; he took part in building up its studio and founded the international EX MACHINA festival for computer music and media art together with Dirk Reith. He was born in 1961 and studied composition with Wolfgang Hufschmidt and electronic composition with Dirk Reith at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen. In the 1980s and 1990s he was involved in the development of the AUDIAC project for computer-aided composition and sound synthesis and designed several composition languages and interactive real-time environments. Since 1988 he has worked as a composer with the Theater der Klänge in Düsseldorf; he belongs to the founding board of the Gesellschaft für Neue Musik Ruhr. In 1994 he took over the teaching of music informatics and electronic composition at the Institut für Computermusik und Elektronische Medien; since October 2004 he has been professor of computer music there and since October 2011 artistic director. His work is devoted to the connection of electronic music and the performing arts. Four albums connect him with Cybele. Two belong to the ex machina series, which bears the same name as the festival: trans (1997) and The Eighties (2001). To these are added the Portrait Wolfgang Hufschmidt (1995) and a contribution to the audiobook production Weht ein Stadtspaziergang durch den Traum (2014).
