Ulrich Dibelius

Ulrich Dibelius was born in Heidelberg on 14 November 1924 and died in Starnberg on 27 April 2008. From 1942 to 1947 he studied music education with cello in Frankfurt and Heidelberg and from 1951 to 1954 history, literature and sociology, among others with Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. After working as a newspaper editor in Hamburg and Frankfurt he worked as a radio editor, first at the NDR and from 1957 to 1987 as music editor at the Bayerischer Rundfunk. As a writer on music and music critic he devoted himself particularly to new music and to the sociology of music. He published, among other things, “Moderne Musik” (Volume I 1966, Volume II 1988), “Verwaltete Musik” (1971), “Herausforderung Schönberg” (1974), books on György Ligeti (1986, 1994) and on Karl Amadeus Hartmann (2004). In 1983 he founded the journal MusikTexte with three colleagues. He is represented as an author on the Cybele album Karl Amadeus Hartmann and the String Quartet (2009).
