Ulrich Dibelius was born in Heidelberg on 14 November 1924 and died in Starnberg on 27 April 2008. After studying music education and cello as well as history, literature and sociology, he worked as a newspaper and radio editor, first for NDR and from 1957 to 1987 for Bayerischer Rundfunk. As a writer and music critic he devoted himself above all to new music and the sociology of music. His multi-volume standard work *Moderne Musik nach 1945* and the journal *MusikTexte*, which he helped to found in 1983, made him an important advocate of contemporary music.
