Born 1951 in Mannheim; Volker Blumenthaler is a German composer and teacher. He studied cello and composition in Mannheim and Cologne, latterly with Jürg Baur. After teaching music theory at the Hochschule für Musik Köln he taught composition and music theory at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg from 1992, becoming professor there in 2014. His compositional focus lies on chamber music, vocal compositions and chamber opera; in 1982 he held a fellowship at the Villa Massimo.
