Alfred Alings

Percussionist / Conductor / artistic director

Alfred Alings was a percussionist and tam-tam player of the early Cologne new music scene. The chronicle of the Darmstadt Summer Courses documents him in 1967 in the Stockhausen ensemble on tam-tam, together with Aloys Kontarsky, Johannes Fritsch, Harald Bojé, Rolf Gehlhaar and Karlheinz Stockhausen. A photograph of 1968 from the circle of the Stockhausen ensemble likewise shows Alings beside these musicians. His participation stands as an example of a performance practice in which percussion instrument, microphone technique and sonic transformation act directly upon one another.
